It is assumed all over the net that Shakespeare himself wrote the little curse on his tombstone. I'm curious about the proof of this story, at the very least what the research leads us to believe. I'm hoping that some folks with access to the best Shakespeare resources can let us know the final word on the subject. I'm pretty certain that there's no proof, but it could still be the case that research leads us to believe that yes, he did write it.

I have been a Shakespeare guy for 40 years and I have seen NO credible authorship subscribed to, "Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear..." It is, to my knowledge, the only time the name of Jesus is even close to the name of Shakespeare.

There's no proof that Shakespeare wrote the curse on the gravestone. However the words are published in William Dugdale's 1656 Antiquities of Warwickshire, which indicates they were placed there at around the time of Shakespeare’s burial or the addition of the monument which was in place by 1623. So if Shakespeare didn't write them it's likely that someone close to him did.
